Abstract
Kim, Hee-Sook & Kim, Young-Seon. 2007. Learnability of Argument Structure of Locative Verbs and Universality of Linking Rules―through Korean English IL Data: Korean Journal of Linguistics, 32-3, 447-469. This paper deals with the learnability problem of locative verbs from a meaning-based point of view. We present problems of the lexical rule by Pinker(1989) and consider that the linking rule by thematic hierarchy is closer to the universal. Based on IL data and the results of other studies, we suggest that Theme is an unmarked argument for the object and Locative/Goal is a marked one. The native speakers of English and Korean both preferentially used the Theme-object structure not the Location-object structure. In relation to Transfer, When the argument structure of English locative verbs does not correspond with that of Korean ones, even the high-level of Korean EFL learners showed different results from English native speakers in the production task and grammatical judgement task. Moreover, according to the results in the verb meaning test, learners tended to judge the grammaticality of the argument structure differently depending on the verb meaning they have. It can be interpreted as supporting the meaning-based syntax-semantics correspondences. (Korea National University of Education·Gusan Middle School)
