Abstract

This paper examines Korean EFL learners’ knowledge of English locative verbs based on a verb meaning test and the grammaticality judgment (GJ) task. Most current theories of second language (L2) acquisition have assumed that first language (L1) plays a significant role at earliest stages of development. In particular, it has been suggested in L2 research that L1 influence on L2 acquisition structure varies depending on whether L2 argument structure forms a subset or a superset of its L1 counterpart. A cross-linguistic comparison of argument structure of locative verbs in English and Korean gives us an opportunity to test the two situations at the same time. Accordingly, this paper investigates issues concerning the two situations where the L1 permits a subset of L2 argument structures and the L1 permits a superset of L2 argument structures, by investigating Korean EFL learners’ acquisition of English locative verb structures. Results show that the L1 argument structure plays a significant role in the acquisition of the L2 argument structure, regardless of whether L2 argument structure forms a subset or a superset of its counterpart, in particular at the earliest stage. Finally, this paper suggests what kind of cues can help Korean EFL learners ultimately learn the various argument structure possibilities of English locative verbs.
