Abstract

Oh, Mira. 2007. Perceptual similarity in telephone numbers, Korean Journal of Linguistics, 32-3, 471-494. Digits in telephone numbers in Korean are chosen to be phonetically similar to the intended message to enhance various degrees of association. This phenomenon has not been hitherto systematically investigated, and thus the first aim of this paper is to provide a detailed descriptive characterization of several aspects of this phenomenon. The second aim is to analyze correspondence between the numbers and the intended message from perspectives of current phonological theory and consider its theoretical implications. Most importantly, I argue that the phenomenon provides empirical support for the P-map hypothesis (Steriade 1999, 2001) as opposed to Evolutionary Phonology (Blevins 2004). I will provide the rankings of faithfulness constraints projected from perceptual similarity rankings within the framework of Optimality Theory. Furthermore, it is shown that Korean speakers take the syllable structure and phonological processes as well as psychoacoustic properties of segments into account when they choose new telephone numbers.
