초록

The naturalness with which case ellipsis occurs in certain environments in Korean has been attributed to the information status and the markedness of arguments, although few studies have explored the ultimate causality of such factors. This article investigates why the factors influencing the choice between case-marked and case-ellipsed object forms have the effects they do and why these factors differ in the direction of their effects. Going one step further, we also investigate the question whether the factors of animacy, definiteness and focus type can be explained in a unified way. We propose that the effects of the factors animacy/definiteness and focus type can be subsumed under a single and simple principle of form minimization, motivated by processing efficiency (Hawkins 2004). In particular, it is shown that the effects of these factors can both be explained in terms of form minimization on the basis of frequency and pragmatic inference (animacy/definiteness effects) and argument prominence (effects of focus type). Abstract
