Multiple Case Construction in Korean and the Discourse Structure

This paper attempts to explain the so-called multiple case construction in Korean from a discourse-theoretic point of view. It suggests that the construction should be explained in terms of how speakers package and arrange the information they intend to convey within a sentence. To elucidate such a communicative motivation, it proposes the Discourse Structure consisting of a Discourse Theme and a Discourse Rheme and shows how the Structure provides a comprehensive account for various kinds of multiple case construction. The fundamental question this paper addresses is wherein lies essential differences between the syntactic-oriented language like English and the discourse-oriented language like Korean from a typological viewpoint. Its answer is that one of the differences lies in the principle determining the basic sentence structure, which the multiple case construction seems to exemplify best.
