기행가사의 진술방식과 문학적 형상화 양상

이 글은 기행가사의 작품론적 특성을 해명하는 관건이라 할 수 있는 ‘여행 체험의 양식화’ 문제를, 진술방식상의 특징과 문학적 형상화 양상을 중심으로 고찰함으로써, 기행가사의 특성과 미학의 일단을 규명하는 포괄적 근거를 마련하고자 한 논의이다.논의의 효율성과 선명성을 위해 기행가사의 개념과 연관된 범주를 ‘작자가 여행을 한다는 분명한 인식의 토대 위에서 자신의 여행 체험을 형상화한 것이 작품 창작의 지배적 동기이자 작품 내용의 주류인 경우’로 한정할 필요를 제기하였고, 이에 따라 관유가사와 사행가사만을 기행가사 범주에 소속시키는 것이 바람직하다고 보았다. 또 기행가사의 독특한 진술방식은 ‘준비－도정－도착－회정’의 과정에서 환기되는 다양한 경물과 풍정 체험을 ‘관찰－소회－표백’의 재현과정을 통해 형상화함으로써 개별 작품마다의 ‘여행 체험의 양식화’가 이루어진다고 보았다.이와 같은 사실을 토대로 할 때, 기행가사는 우선 상황이나 추이의 과감한 생략과 이동과 같은 작품 전개의 역동성을 기반으로, 여정에서 대면하는 경물이나 풍정 체험을 단위화를 지향하는 진술방식을 통해 형상화함으로써, 파노라마적 재현이 이루어지게 하는 데 그 특징적 일면이 있다. 또한, 공간의 빈번한 이동으로부터 소재적 다양성이 확보되고 토로의 층위 또한 다양한 양상을 띠는바, 해당 장면에서의 풍정이나 소회를 세밀하게 묘사하는 진술방식을 통해 여정의 체험을 형상화함으로써, 비일상적 정서의 확장과 다채로운 감수성의 추구가 가능하다는 데 그 특징적 일면이 있다. 그리고 기행가사의 현장감 넘치는 묘사와 이를 토대로 한 생동적인 형상 창출은 재현의 현장성과 구상적 이미지의 환기를 지향하고 있음을 드러내는데, 이와 같은 진술방식과 형상화 양상으로부터 정태적이고 장식적인 표현이 지양되는 미적 표현효과가 발휘되는 점 역시 기행가사가 지닌 특징적 일면이라 할 수 있다.
Abstract
It is not an easy task to classify Gasa(Korean old literary texts) with an uniform criterion because they are described relatively long and have various genres. However, in case of Travelers' Gasa, a genre of Gasa, it can be categorized as one which describe the traveling experience according to the alteration of space. Its peculiar procedure ordinarily consists of 'preparation-traveling-arrival-recollection' and the texts are written through the process of 'observation-excursion-manifestation' with the experience of diverse scenery. Firstly, Travelers' Gasa texts depict subjects or emotion of traveling experience and visualizes the scenes on the basis of alteration of perspectives. The Travelers' Gasa texts have features to make panoramic restoration from the traveling experience. Secondly, Travelers' Gasa texts can draw detailed depiction from the diverse means of expression for it is the reflection of travel experience in unusual place and make the expansion of interest and consciousness possible. Emotional expansion and varied sensibility are the literary aesthetic part of the Travelers' Gasa texts. Finally, realistic description and lively creation shows that the writers intend to pursue the experiential reality and build a concrete image instead of abstract theory or insipid explanation. Intension to avoid the stationary and decorative expressions is one feature of Travelers' Gasa texts as well.
