A New Perspective on Tone or Pitch-accent in Korean: With Special Reference to its Non-phonological Reality

Tone or pitch-accent in Middle Korean and some dialects in Modern Korean is thought to be ‘lexically’ contrastive. While significant attention has been paid to tone or pitch accent for a long time, many issues still remain unsolved. In this paper, I propose that neither tone nor pitch-accent can be ‘lexical’ or ‘phonemic’, based on evidence as follows: First, there was/is no genuine minimal pair in the lexicon. Second, there was no clear evidence on Korean tonogenesis in Old Korean. Third, contemporary Korean is currently undergoing tonogenesis. This suggests that none of Modern dialects in Korean can be classified as either a tone language or a pitch-accent language. The prosodic prominence should be treated as a non-phonological entity. This study not only solved problems that have been puzzled so far, but also provided evidence against traditional tonal phonology.
