Middle Korean is thought to be a tone language, not a chrone language. The traditional view raises two theoretical problems. First, according to Bangjeom, there is no high and low tonal contrast at the word level. Second, there are differences between long and short vowels in Middle Korean. In this paper, I examine the diachronic and synchronic aspects of vowel length in Korean. I argue that not only Middle Korean but also contemporary Korean belongs to a chrone language where vowel length is the only prosodeme that has genuine minimal pairs at the word level. I conclude that Korean does not have an unusual prosodic phonology, and there is no need to complicate Korean prosody.
