This study investigates vowel production andperceptual differences in Korean monophthong vowel between novice femalespeakers from Myanmar and native Korean female speakers. In the productionexperiment, Myanmar speakers demonstrated a higher position for the Koreanmonophthong /i/ and a wider distribution of F1 values for the vowel /a/ comparedto Korean speakers. While there was no significant difference between the twogroups in the production of /e/ and /ɛ/ in relation to F1 values, Korean speakersexhibited denser clustering in their production compared to Myanmar speakers. The absence of the Korean monophthong /ɯ/ in the Myanmar phonologicalsystem resulted in Myanmar speakers producing it further back with a widerand less uniform distribution. Clear differences were observed in the productionof /u/ and /o/, with Myanmar speakers relying on F1 differences and Koreanspeakers on F2 differences. In the perception experiment, novice Myanmarspeakers struggled to differentiate the Korean monophthong /ɯ/, likely due toits absence in the Myanmar phonetic system, leading to insufficient perceptualmapping. Overall, the findings suggest that /ɯ/ poses the greatest challenge forMyanmar learners of Korean monophthong vowels, highlighting the need forimproved educational methods.
