초록

In spoken languages, color terms are metonymically utilized to refer to other concepts, in isolation, as in blacks and, in compounds, as in blue collar and White House. The meaning extensions of color terms have been well-attested in spoken languages but a few, if any, have been known about sign languages. In an attempt to answer the question whether there are similar phenomena in sign languages, this study explores color terms in Korean Sign Language. The result shows that color terms are formed by using body parts and animals & plants whose colors are their salient properties, and that the color terms actively participate much more in designating new concepts in Korean Sign Language than in spoken languages such as English and Korean. A color term and a sign for visual, gustatory, tactile information, in combination, refer to a new concept. BLUE and BRIGHT, in combination, refer to SKY, BLACK and SALTY refer to SOY-SAUCE, WHITE and SOFT refer to TOFU. The phenomenon is rarely observed in Korean and English. The result suggests that (COLOR) PROPERTY FOR CATEGORY metonymy is utilized more actively in Korean Sign Language.
