초록
This paper, rejecting the widely-spread and seemingly well-established assumption that the sentence-ending –e in Korean marks imperatives and a particular level of hearer-oriented honorification, suggests that it marks directly-addressed utterance toward the addressee, which we call direct addressives, in this paper. In doing so, we first point out that the sentence-ending –e occurs in all sentence types and in all levels of speech style. Assuming that –e is the marker of directly-addressed utterance toward the addressee, we can offer a uniform and principled account for why it occurs in all types of sentences and all levels of speech style, as well as for various constructions including cry sentence, sentential emphasis, and descriptive sentences in conversation. Furthermore, our analysis sheds a new light on the characteristics of Korean imperatives that have hitherto not been observed and the behavior of hearer-oriented honorific marker –yo.
