초록

This study examines phonological variations, specifically deletion, contraction, and insertion, in messenger conversations among Seoul-based individuals in their twenties, using corpus data. The objective is to quantitatively analyze these variations and explore gender differences. The findings indicate that deletion phenomena occur more frequently among females compared to males, with significant gender differences observed in the deletion of vowels(/i/, /e/) and consonants (/s/, /h/) (p<.001). Conversely, contraction phenomena did not exhibit statistically significant gender differences, suggesting that females may demonstrate a more pronounced variation in deletion patterns. Regarding phonological insertion, both males and females frequently added sounds such as /kh/ and /ŋ/, which are associated with expressing personal intention and friendliness. These insertions, however, exhibited significant gender differences(p<.001). Additionally, while the insertion of /l/ was less common compared to the insertion of /kh/ and /ŋ/, it also demonstrated significant gender differences(p<.05). Therefore, it appears that women more actively express non-verbal emotional intentions, such as friendliness, in their messenger communications compared to men.
