Abstract
This study was to investigate persistent effectiveness of reading strategies instruction through reciprocal teaching. Reciprocal teaching is a teaching method which is theoretically based on social constructivism and emphasizes social interactions in learning. During reading strategies instruction through reciprocal teaching, a teacher models how to use reading strategies and students are supposed to, with the support of their teacher, practice and apply their own reading strategies. At the end, students can use their own reading strategies independently. Two classes of higher graders in a primary school participated in this study. One class as an experimental group received reading strategy instruction through reciprocal teaching and the other class as a controlgroup received reading instruction according to the 7th English Curriculum in Korea. The results of the study showed that the experimental group achieved a higher score than the control group in the post test and the delayed post test. In the delayed post test, persistent effectiveness of the reading strategies instruction through reciprocal teaching appeared in the higher and middle level groups. These results suggested that a longer period of reading strategies instruction would be necessary for the lower level group students and that the teacher's role is very important in thesense of cognitive apprenticeship.
