Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to fill certain gaps in 17th-century Korean literature and to lay the groundwork for further research. To achieve this goal, I examined a newly discovered text, Sunambangongjip (The Collected Works of Sunambangong). This text is the literary collection of Jeong Hun, a major 17th-century poet in Korean literature, and it remains largely unknown in academic circles. The discussion proceeds in the following order: an examination of the text’s bibliographical characteristics, an overview of the poetic works included in the collection, and an exploration of how this text may address certain unresolved issues raised in previous research. The findings are as follows: First, a comparative analysis of Sunambangongjip, Sunambangongyugo, and Bangongyugo in Chapter 2 reveals some distinctions in their bibliographical features and relationships. Second, an overview of the poetic works in Sunambangongjip in Chapter 3 reveals newly discovered creations by Jeong Hun. The total volume of his poetic works is as follows: 19 sijo titles comprising 43 pieces and 8 gasa pieces. Third, Chapter 4 addresses unresolved issues from prior studies. For example, the “Wolgokdapga”(Wolgok’s Reply Song) is a yeonsijo composed by Wolgok in admiration of Jeong Hun, not the other way around as previously interpreted. Furthermore, the Sino-Korean poems included in Bangongyugo are all translated sijo, except for “Ueum”(Occasional Composition). Therefore, debates about whether certain Sino-Korean poems in the collection are translations can now be considered resolved.
