초록

Linguistic signs contain spirits, world-view, and cultural traits of the people who use the language. Translators bring these signs into the texts of their own language in a changed form to fit in their culture. Newly created texts of the target language are a complicated and multi-dimensional structure of communication that corresponds to socio-cultural environment of the target language. The translator has much affection to So-Weol Kim and studied Kim's poems very hard which qualifies him as a competent translator. He integrated contents and forms harmoniously in his translations. Many devices such as indention, the shift of signs in the sentence that are used in this translation are only for the readers who are not familiar with the Korean culture. Especially these remarkable results are viewed in his english version of 「산유화 Mountain Flowers」 and 「진달래꽃 Azaleas」. However, some English translations do not perfectly replace their Korean originals under his considerations for non-Korean readers. Sometimes, though, this leads to unsatisfying result to foreign readers, since while doing so, the translations may lose their atmosphere and nuance of the originals. For example, he translated '접동새 jubdongsae(the scops owl)' into 'the cuckoo'. It is not only incorrect but perverts meanings and feelings of the original poem. This reveals that he failed to adopt and adapt Korean culture. We can take these errors, with a broad mind, for the result of the translator's thoughtful consideration to make his English readers understand easily. However, no matter how thoughtful he may be, it is still problematic that foreign readers can miss the unique mood, nuance and subtle differences in the original because of the mistranslated Korean poems. Because the translator of The Cuckoo is a person who holds a responsible position to educate Korean literature in the United States, these problems are more serious. Although he got plenty of preliminary information of Korean culture, but he was unable to get the subtle knowledge of Korean tradition. Consequently, he left a stain on his translation. From this fact, we can assume that the literary translation requires hardship and difficulty. Therefore, it is not too much to say that the appropriate translation of Korean literature is almost impossible, unless proper understanding of Korean literature and culture is preceded.

Abstract
