Abstract

This paper reviews the status of Classical Chinese in the wake of ‘the Basic Law of Korean National Language,’ and also seeks a desirable direction for teaching Classical Chinese in the future. The Law is exclusive of Classical Chinese characters and their associated culture, reflecting an ultra-nationalistic attitude in language. The Law, therefore, needs revision to some extent. Moreover, the Law is a form of cultural violence, because it enacts the prescribed norms of language by legal force derived from the state’s authority and power.In order to supplement the shortcomings of the Law and to adapt properly to changing environment of language in this information age, we have to give a positive consideration to learning and teaching Classical Chinese. Reinforcing of teaching Classical Chinese in schools will lead to a practical and flexible application of the policy of the exclusive use of hangul. Besides, increased using and appreciating of Classical Chinese characters and literature is needed to meet the demand for them in our society.
