초록
This research attempts to discover the relationship between the number of formulaic sequences (FSs) (e.g., on the table) that are used in second language (L2) learners’ speech and their fluency scores. Previous L2 studies have long been explored on the relationship between the number of FSs and their relevance to the level of L2 proficiency. We pay attention to certain FSs and further refine them, to identify the patterns between FSs and comprehensibility. In this study 411 FSs were extracted from timed-picture description speech tasks by adults Korean learners of English. Results showed a statistically significant correlation between the number of FSs and L2 comprehensibility scores. Also, both high and low proficiency groups had no differences concerning bi-grams, however there was a difference regarding 3, 4 and total number of n-grams. Furthermore, total number of n-grams turned out to be the best predictor for the comprehensibility scores. Overall, this paper revalidates that learning FSs of various n-grams is indispensable to improve L2 fluency.
