Abstract

This article explores the proper nouns in the Korean translation of L'arbre sans fin, a French picture book by Claude Ponti. In a fictional world, the proper nouns assume not only their denotative function, but also convey meaning. In other words, the author uses onomastic terms as a means to transfer his intentions. In L'arbre sans fin, the proper nouns were invented by the author/illustrator Ponti; therefore, they have particular meaning, and some are phonetic puns. These creative proper nouns are begun with a capital letter to provide onomastic status. The onomastic neologisms are divided into two groups: single-word proper nouns and compounded versions using hyphens. Unlike French, Korean does not feature capital letters as a mark of proper nouns. The Korean translation here employs single quotation marks to retain the onomastic status, and quotation marks also substitute for hyphens to indicate that an expression in question is a compound word. A name as a whole or a portion of the name can be placed within single quotation marks in the translation. The element of the name that remains outside of the quotation marks becomes a common noun. Without the single quotation marks, a translated proper noun loses its onomastic status in the Korean translation and is converted into a common noun. As for the proper nouns featuring phonetic puns, the Korean translation conveys only their meaning without any recreation of the wordplay. The single-word proper nouns are phonetically transcribed without being set inside single quotation marks, but their phonetical foreignness leads the reader to recognize them as character names. These various translation techniques result in a discrepancy between the proper nouns in the source text and those in the target text. It indicates that the translation is not a reproduction of the original text, but should be considered an outcome of negotiation.
