포스트모던 그림책의 번역에서 나타난 파라텍스트의 변형 연구

본 연구는 포스트모던 그림책의 번역에서 나타난 파라텍스트의 변형 양상 및 이러한 변형이 그림책 읽기에 미치는 영향에 대하여 살펴보는데 목적을 두고 시행되었다. 이를 위해 대표적인 포스트모던 그림책 10권의 원본과 번역본을 비교하며 파라텍스트 변형에서 나타난 부분을 분석한 결과, 포스트모던 그림책의 번역과정에서 드러난 파라텍스트의 변형은 그 유형에 따라 포스트모던 그림책이 가진 특성이 두드러지도록 새로운 의미를 생성해 내거나, 원작에서 읽을 수 있는 작가의 의도를 왜곡시키기도 하였다. 이를 통해, 파라텍스트는 편집과정에서 특별한 주의를 요하는 공간으로 고려되어야 하고, 그 중에서도 제목은 본 텍스트의 읽기 방향을 제시하는데 크게 기여하고 있으며, 글과 그림 언어에 대한 풍부한 이해가 요청됨을 논의하였다.

Abstract

Paratexts, meaning any parts of a book which is not part of the main narrative, including a book’s title, reviews and blurbs, but which, always, in some way, influence a reader’s interpretation of the book, is a term coined by the French critic Gerard Genette in 1987. Paratexts influence interpretation for books written in one’s native tongue. This study is based on the premise that translations of texts from one language to another may inadvertently transform the meaning of the original paratext and hence the interpretation of the narrative. To test the premise, the study analyzes the transformations in translation of the paratexts in postmodern picturebooks and explores the roles paratexts, in and out of translation, perform in picturebooks. To this end, we employed content analysis of paratexts in 10 postmodern picturebooks. The results of this study find that the transformations in translation of the paratexts in postmodern picturebooks are capable of creating new meanings for the characteristics of pastmodern picturebooks but in doing so, they may also distort the author's intentions. The implications of this finding lead to the conclusions that paratexts should be considered as important spaces when translating postmodern picturebooks from one language/culture to another. And especially, translators should remember that typically, the title is an important paratext with much influence on how the picturebook’s text is to be interpreted. Thus, translators should be required to fully understand the words and pictures of any picturebook in the language and culture in which it was composed.
