다독(extensive reading)은 학습자가 흥미와 수준에 맞는 책을 선택하여 의미에집중하면서 빠르게 지속적으로 읽는 방법으로 학습자의 자율성과 흥미를 중시하여 지속적 읽기가 가능하고, 어휘 이해는 물론 문장력, 담화 능력을 길러준다. 그러나, 다독의 장점에도 불구하고 우리나라는 영어가 외국어로서 습득되는 상황이고, 다독이 교육과정에서 다루어지지 않기 때문에 제대로 실시하기 어려운 실정이다. 따라서 본 연구에서는 영어 읽기 능력을 향상시킬 수 있는 방법으로 초등학교에서 다독 교육을 실천하고 구현할 수 있는 체계화된 초등학교 영어 다독 교수요목 확립 방안을 연구하였다. 본 연구에서는 우리나라의 개정 영어과 교육과정과 외국의 다독 교육 상황을 비교⋅분석할 수 있는 교육과정 중 읽기 영역에 대한 분석 및 5∼6학년 영어 교과서를 다독의 관점에서 분석하였다. 또한, 교사와 학생을 대상으로 실시한 설문조사 결과 다독 교육을 실시하기 위해서는 체계적인 초등학교 영어 다독 교수요목이 필요하다는 다수의 의견을 시사점으로 추출하였다. 우리나라는 국가 교육과정 체제이기 때문에 다독 교수요목을 설계할 때 교육과정을 바탕으로, 읽기 교육의 취약점을 보완할 수 있는 절충적 교수요목으로 설계의방향을 세웠고, 목표를 설립한 후 그에 따른 내용 체계 즉, 어휘 수와 문장 길이,성취 기준을 단계별로 제시하였으며, 간단한 평가 방법을 포함하여 최종적으로초등학교 영어 다독 교수요목 모형을 단계별로 설계하였다.
Abstract
This research is conducted to establish a systematic elementary Englishcurriculum for EFL extensive reading as a way of improving students’reading ability. The research provides a systematic program for EFLextensive reading to work within the National English Curriculum,thereby complementing the current reading education in Korea. Theresearch proceeds as follows. First, the goals for extensive reading areset up on the ground of theoretical study and needs analysis. Second,several components that consist of the contents of the extensive readingcurriculum are listed in terms of vocabulary size, sentence length,achievement standard, and evaluation guideline by grade. Third, ateaching model for the extensive reading curriculum is developed for eachreading grade level. Finally, a sample lesson plan for the extensivereading curriculum is suggested for application. The conclusions are asfollows. First, this research highlights the importance and potentialeffects of extensive reading in EFL contexts by developing an EFLcurriculum for extensive reading. Second, this research is significant in that it establishes an extensive reading curriculum for elementaryEnglish education based on the National English Curriculum and that itproposes useful teaching models for extensive reading to be realized inthe actual classroom.
