본 연구는 2019년부터 2023년까지 5년간 일본 신문 칼럼에서 외래어 사용의 경향과 그 변천을 체계적으로 분석하는 것을 목적으로 하고 있다. 정량적 데이터를 바탕으로 외래어 사용이 사회적·경제적 배경, 특히 COVID-19 팬데믹과 디지털화와 같은 대규모 사건들과 어떻게 연관되어 있는지 고찰하였다. 조사 결과 2020년에는 "의료"와 "생리역병"과 관련된 외래어가 급증하여 팬데믹의 영향을 반영하였다. 특히 COVID-19가 일본 사회에 미친 사회적 변화가 외래어 사용 패턴에 크게 영향을 미친 것으로 나타났다. 2022년에는 정보통신 분야에서 외래어 사용이 눈에 띄게 증가하였으며 이는 디지털화와 그에 따른 기술 발전이 일본 사회에 큰 변화를 일으켰음을 시사한다. 또한, 국제적 안전보장 및 분쟁과 관련된 외래어도 자주 사용되어 외래어가 일본의 사회적·문화적 메시지를 전달하는 중요한 수단임이 드러났다. 이러한 결과는 외래어가 단순한 언어적 현상에 그치지 않고 일본 사회의 사회적·문화적 변화를 반영하는 중요한 지표임을 보여준다. 향후 연구에서 는 이와 같은 외래어의 변화를 보다 상세히 분석하고 현대 일본에서의 언어 사용 동향을 심층적으로 파악할 필요가 있다.
Abstract
This study systematically analyzes the trends and transitions in the use of loanwords in Japanese newspaper columns over a five-year period from 2019 to 2023. Based on quantitative data, the research examines how loanword usage correlates with social and economic contexts, especially major events such as the COVID-19 pandemic and the rapid digitalization of society. The findings reveal a significant surge in loanwords related to "medical" and "epidemiology" in 2020, reflecting the impact of the pandemic. In 2022, loanwords associated with the information and communication sectors saw a notable increase, indicating the progression of digital transformation. Additionally, loanwords linked to international security and conflicts were frequently used, underscoring the role of loanwords in conveying socio-cultural messages through media. These results suggest that loanwords serve not merely as linguistic phenomena but as indicators of societal and cultural shifts in Japanese society. Future research should further explore these loanword trends to deepen the understanding of linguistic usage in modern Japan.
