Abstract

This paper compares and analyzes the Korean translation of the English novel PACHINKO, published by publishing houses Munhak Sasang and Influential, respectively, and the Japanese translation, and examines the direction of translation, the translator's cultural understanding, and the influence of linguistic constraints on translation. In other words, the differences between Korean and Japanese translations are analyzed based on the Korean and Japanese notations used in the English original and the regional characteristics of Osaka, Japan, against the background of the Chosen Dynasty and the Showa period during Japanese colonial rule. First, the Munhak Sasang edition had many parts that directly reflected errors in the original, and cases of mistranslation due to lack of understanding of Japanese culture were also revealed. Second, the ‘Influential’ edition, similar to that of Munhak Sasang, followed the errors of the original, but there were improvements that took into account the historicalbackground, such as translating ‘Yeongdo ferry’ into ‘ferry.’ Third, the Japanese translation followed the errors related to Chosen culture in the English original, but there were no errors related to Japanese culture. All three translations emphasized the character's personality through the passive use of dialect and the active introduction of honorifics. In other words, the translation of PACHINKO is not simply a language change but a result of a reinterpretation of culture and language context.
