Abstract

This study looked at how Japanese language skills are passed down from parents to children in four families from Korea with Korean and Japanese backgrounds. The researchers used a method called Trajectory Equifinality Modeling (TEM) to show and analyze this process. We considered the common factors that influenced the process of Japanese language inheritance from infancy to school age and obtained suggestions. When starting from infancy, input can be given in Japanese naturally because there is no rejection reaction to the language. By exposing children to the mother tongue of their Japanese parents from infancy, Japanese acts as a medium to build a parent-child bond. Parents need to understand their children's temperament and preferences and acquire correct knowledge about Japanese language inheritance. Having a place such as a community where parents and children can interact in Japanese provides a sense of stability. When starting from school age, the younger the child, the less difficult it is to start inheriting the language, but inheritance is possible at any time if parents understand the child's personality and preferences and create an input and output environment that suits the child. The parent-child bond becomes the motivation for Japanese language inheritance, and children try to learn Japanese in order to build it. This requires knowledge of Japanese heritage that differs from foreign language education after school age, and the parts of the four skills that parents cannot cover can be supplemented by taking heritage Japanese classes.
