Abstract
This study utilized intelligence modeling (TEM) approach to visualize the process of Japanese language and culture inheritance among two Japanese mothers residing in Korea who reported not having taught Japanese to their children from infancy, and their two children who voluntarily began learning Japanese after adolescence. The study focused on two aspects: (1)whether parents had provided any opportunities or encouragement for their children to be exposed to Japanese language or culture, and (2) what factors prompted the children to begin learning Japanese. We also examined differences between siblings. (1) Both Japanese mothers reported that family communication was conducted in Korean, but they had provided opportunities for their children to be exposed to Japanese language and culture. (2) One child cited anime as the specific trigger for learning Japanese, and the fact that their mother is Japanese served as a strong motivation to learn the language. However, the younger sister does not yet share the same strong motivation to learn Japanese as her older brother. Another child mentioned that their father's paternalism positively influenced their ability to learn Japanese, but it had a negative effect on their younger sibling.
