Abstract

In this study, the process of the Japanese language and culture inheritance was visualized using TEM to examine three cases of two Japanese mothers who have continued to pass on the Japanese language since infancy and three children who continue to maintain Japanese language as adults. In the process, we identified the changes in motivation through the framework of Self-Determination Theory and revealed the factors that contributed to the children's acquisition and maintenance of Japanese. We found that the children's motivation changed from “external regulation” to “identified regulation,” or from “external regulation” to “identified regulation” to “integrated regulation,” which is the stage with the lowest degree of autonomy of extrinsic motivation. But "intrinsic regulation," the stage with the most autonomy of intrinsic motivation, can happen at any time. While the three children's acquisition of Japanese was driven by extrinsic motivation, they were unable to maintain it unless they were simultaneously intrinsically motivated, suggesting that the balance of extrinsic and intrinsic motivation was a factor in their acquisition and maintenance of it. Parents need to work on both aspects of extrinsic and intrinsic motivation to help their children acquire and retain Japanese.
