Abstract
The purpose of this study is to examine how upper-class women use language in the Meiji novel "Higansugimade" (1912), focusing on vocabulary expression and parts of speech. To this end, "Higansugimade" by Soseki Natsume was selected to understand the actual state of language use by upper-class women, and analyzed the dialogue between upper- and lower-class characters, focusing on the composition ratio and frequency of word types and parts of speech. The results of the analysis and discussion are as follows. First, in terms of vocabulary expression, the number and proportion of Chinese words used by upper-class women (24.17%) was 5.42% higher than that of lower-class women (18.75%). Second, in terms of speech usage, the number and percentage (51.41%) of nouns used by upstream women was about 6.52% higher than those (44.89%) of nouns used by lower-class women. Upon examining these analysis results, it was confirmed through the word distribution rate and part-of-speech distribution rate of this study that, due to the rapid increase in Kanji vocabulary during the Meiji era, not only upper-class women but also lower-class women attempted to use Kanji as much as possible.
