Abstract
This study reports on the implementation of a capstone course conducted during the second semester of the 2023 academic year, focusing on its educational outcomes and the challenges identified through its execution and a student survey. In this course, students worked collaboratively on a project assigned by a client company and presented their solutions in a final presentation. The course was conducted in partnership with a Japanese university, and students from both countries worked separately on the same problem. The course aimed to develop students’ problem-solving abilities through project-based learning, specifically enhancing creativity, problem identification and resolution, information gathering and analysis, presentation skills, communication, collaboration, and self-directed learning. Survey results indicated that students progressed with problem-solving, information analysis, and independent learning, thereby demonstrating the educational effectiveness of the course. However, several challenges emerged, including sustaining student motivation, selecting tasks that matched students’ abilities and interests, and providing sufficient instructional support throughout the project. To improve course management in the future, we should consider strategies such as clarifying course registration criteria, effectively communicating the goals and significance of the capstone course, designing a phased instructional approach, and expanding opportunities for student exchange with the partner university.
