본 논문은 NHK 대하드라마 『신선조!』를 2000년대 초반의 일본 사회상과 연관해 파악하려는 시도이다. 2000년대 초반의 일본사회는 90년대에서 이어진 불안과 혼돈이 사회적 격차라는 키워드로 분출되던 시기였고 이를 가장 밀접하게 체화했던 것은 단카이주니어라고 불리던 젊은 세대였다. 2004년의 대하드라마 『신선조!』는 기존의 NHK 대하드라마 전통, 혹은 신선조 이미지의 계보와는 구별되는 확연한 차별성을 보여주는데, 이는 당시의 여러 사회상이 반영된 결과로 보는 것이 가능하다. 본 논문에서는 당시의 대중문화 흐름을 주도했던 단카이주니어 세대의 특성들이 『신선조!』에 녹아들면서 드러나는 차별성에 주목하면서도 대하드라마라는 장르적 범주 내에서 안주하는 서사의 한계점을 동시에 확인함으로써 NHK 대하드라마의 계보에서 지금까지도 중요한 위치를 차지하고 있는 대하드라마 『신선조!』의 의의를 파악하고자 한다.
Abstract
This paper is an attempt to grasp NHK's epic drama "Shinsengumi!" in connection with the Japanese social situation in the early 2000s. In the early 2000s, Japanese society was a time when anxiety and confusion that continued in the 1990s were erupting with the keywords of social gap, and the most closely embodied was the younger generation called Dankai Junior. The 2004 drama "Shinsengumi!" shows a distinct difference from the existing NHK drama tradition or the genealogy of Shinsengumi's image, which can be seen as a result of reflecting various social aspects of the time. In this paper, the characteristics of the Dankai Junior generation, which led the popular culture flow of the time, are reflected in the differentiation of the new generation, and the limitations of the narrative that are complacent within the genre category of the epic drama.
