Abstract

This paper offers a comparative analysis of Masukagami and Towazugatari, two historical narratives depicting the Kamakura period. Masukagami draws upon a wide range of sources in constructing its historical worldview, among which Towazugatari is utilized both extensively and boldly. The manner in which Masukagami incorporates Towazugatari is particularly distinctive. Focusing on how Masukagami receives and reinterprets Towazugatari, a personal record written by a court woman, this study explores the unique historical consciousness expressed by the female perspective within Towazugatari, as mediated through Masukagami. The relationships depicted in Towazugatari between Nijō and the men surrounding her are shown to be intricately connected to the political rivalry between Emperor Go-Fukakusa and Emperor Kameyama. Through Masukagami, it becomes evident that the two imperial lines were in conflict over the imperial succession, and that due to Go-Fukakusa's frail health, their father, Emperor Go-Saga, favored his younger son, Kameyama. This paternal favoritism gave rise to Go-Fukakusa’s inferiority complex toward his brother, ultimately fueling their political antagonism. Within this framework of imperial rivalry, Nijō was arguably manipulated as a pawn in Go-Fukakusa’s political strategies and schemes. Towazugatari may thus be regarded as a text in which a powerless court woman articulates politics and power through the lens of sexuality.
