Abstract
NHK Historical Drama is the general term for a series of historical dramas broadcast on NHK for a year. NHK Historical Drama don't just randomly select famous historical figures, but choose the right ones to send a message to Japan at the time. It is particularly interesting to note that out of the 63 NHK Historical dramas, only 15 have female protagonists, and most of the female protagonists are the “wife” of historical figures. However, Murasaki Shikibu, the protagonist of “Dear Radiance”(2024), was chosen for her literary achievements, not as someone's wife. Therefore, this paper analyzes “Dear Radiance” and examines its significance and limitations as an NHK drama with a female protagonist. The Japanese Middle Ages, during which Murasaki Shikibu was active, was also a time when women's literature blossomed. In addition to The Tale of Genji, works by female writers of the time, such as “The Pillow Book of Sei Shonagon” and “The Izumi Shikibu Diary”, are featured throughout the drama, and their motivations for writing and interpretations of their works are discussed and analyzed. The drama shows not only Murasaki Shikibu, but also the agency of women in the Heian period, when women who were bound by social conventions sought to fulfill their goals through writing. The show recreates “The Tale of Genjii”'s ‘Appraisal on a rainy night’ and the female mahiro, who was excluded from the original, eavesdrops on the fair, giving it a new female-centered interpretation. However, it is unfortunate that the overall narrative seems to be more about the status difference between the main characters, Mahiro and Michinaga, than about the issue of women, giving the impression that the story is inconsistent.
