Abstract
Jeju Mokkwanaji is referred to as the site where the government complex used to stand, including “Dongheon”(main building of provincial office) of Jeju-mok in the Chosun Period. Nowadays it is under the jurisdiction of Samdo-2-dong, one of Jeju city’s 19 administrative dongs. Tamna, which already came into being in this area during the fifth century, is said to have had the status of autonomously operated political system until the early tenth century. Thereinafter, main villages of Jeju community had come up in the area revolving around Jeju Mokkwanaji. The names of ‘Samdo-2-dong’ for the Jeju Mokkwanaji area and ‘Samdo-1-dong’ are originated from the place name of ‘Samdo-ri’ of the Chosun Period. In the case of the ‘Samdori’ region, the origin about its firstly-formed village was suggested in ‘Samsungshinhwa’ and its history and development can be traced back through archaeological materials and historical documents. As such, it has been revealed that the area included the main villages in the biggest scale since those of Tamna’s were built during the Koryo and Chosun Periods until 1950s. Furthermore, scattered around this area are historical remains that help get a sense of the formation and changes of the Jeju society. Also, a number of village remains can be found, relative to the starting and development of Tamna. Accordingly, the area of Jeju Mokkwanaji is thought to be entitled for maintenance, repairs and overhaul as well as preservation with a discerning eye, showcasing the formative history of Jeju.
