Abstract

According to myths and epics, Tamna was founded in the 8th year of Yeongpyeong (65), and according to archaeological data, it was formed in the 2nd to 3rd century, and according to literature, it was formed in the 5th century at the latest. Tamna was dissolved in 1105 (10th year of King Sukjong) and Tamna-gun was established. The period of Tamna is divided into the early Tamna period (0~200), the early Tamna period (201~660), the late Tamna period (661~900), the late Tamna period (901~1105), and the Tamna reorganization period (1106~1404). First, the identity as seen in archaeological data is similar to the formation of the Korean people, with three groups of tribes moving to the Korean Peninsula and settling down as the central power of the Tamna Kingdom. Around the time of the founding of Goryeo, pottery produced in Tamna disappeared, and Goryeo tiles, pottery, and celadon were widely distributed, becoming incorporated into the culture of the Korean Peninsula. Second, the identity of Tamna as seen in literature maintained its status as a Tamna state while maintaining maritime cultural exchanges with Goguryeo, Baekje, and Silla. In addition, through exchanges with China and Japan, Tamna developed internationally by introducing advanced civilizations. After that, following exchanges with Unified Silla, it still maintained its status as an independent state and formed relations with Goryeo. Tamna was disbanded in 1105 (10th year of King Sukjong’s reign) with the establishment of Tamna Commandery, but the conflict continued as Yuan tried to guarantee the status of Tamna as an independent state as much as possible, while Goryeo wanted to strengthen its control over Tamna centered on Goryeo. Tamna was completely integrated as a part of the Korean people in 1404 (4th year of King Taejong’s reign). Third, the identity of Tamna as seen in myths and shamanic materials is that Tamna was founded in 65 AD (Yeongpyeong 8), and after that, myths and epic shamanic songs formed the central foundation of the spiritual culture that protected the nation and people of Tamna along with the Tamna Ipchun Gut throughout the Tamna period. The epic shamanic songs and other shamanic rituals centered on Tamna were performed in Tamna by worshipping the Hallasan God and his son, Gwangyangwang God, as national guardian deities. This tradition came to an end in 1702 when Pastor Lee Hyeong-sang abolished the Tamna guardian deity shrine and converted Hallasan God into a national ritual, performing it as a Confucian ritual. Finally, the highest ruler of Tamna was called the King of Tamna, the Lord of Tamna, and the King of Tamna. The King was the Lord of Seongju and the Prince was the father-king, so Tamna was ruled by a dualistic junta. The Chilseongdan was built in the capital city of Tamna and a ritual was performed to offer sacrifices to heaven. Goryeo maintained relations with Tamna through methods of appeasement and inclusion, such as sending Prince Seongju, Musan-gye Suyeo, and the Old Tang envoy. The historical legacy of Tamna is a creative worldview centered on the universe, a sense of community based on coexistence and co-prosperity, and a pioneering spirit centered on the ocean.
