Abstract
Japan’s three most famous hot springs—Kusatsu Onsen in Gunma Prefecture, Arima Onsen in Hyogo Prefecture, and Gero Onsen in Gifu Prefecture—are at the heart of regional tourism, thanks to their history and exceptional water quality. This study analyzes trends in prior research on Kusatsu Onsen, a hot spring resort that has been utilized since the Nara period, and onsen tourism. It examines the characteristics of Kusatsu Onsen tourism resources through field research. This is a place where you can simultaneously enjoy the experiences, wellness, healing, and gastronomy that are considered attractive elements of new tourism in postmodern tourism. It is spatially well-connected so that anyone can enjoy yumomi (hot springs), traditional ryokans, mineral springs, open-air hot springs, and public bathhouses centered around the central square of Yubatake. Kusatsu Onsen’s fusion of traditional and modern experiences and healing concepts to create a residential hot spring culture can serve as a case study for a specialized regional tourism strategy that can help the area revitalize itself as a global hot spring destination, not just a domestic tourist destination, amidst the continued decline of domestic hot spring tourist destinations.
