Abstract
This study presents the geomorphological landscape characteristics and conservation management strategies of Sorokdo Island, located in Goheung-gun, Jeollanam-do, South Korea. Sorokdo has a historical background as a forced isolation facility for Hansen's disease patients during the Japanese colonial period. The research focuses on the intrinsic value of the geomorphological resources, ecological functions, and interactions with the human environment. In accordance with the guidelines for National Ecosystem Survey, 32 sites were investigated. Through the use of drones, boats, and cooperation with relevant institutions, previously undocumented features such as sea caves, abandoned paddy wetlands, artificial lakes, and spits were also identified. Coastal landforms account for approximately two-thirds of the surveyed sites, with sandy beaches and coastal dunes forming stable landscapes characterized by Pinus thunbergii stands or dune vegetation. To promote the integrated conservation of Sorokdo, this study proposes the concept of bi-tourism which combines dark tourism—reflecting the island's historical legacy—with geotourism and ecotourism that emphasize its well-preserved natural environment. The study underscores the necessity of adopting an integrated management strategy that embraces both natural and cultural values.
