Abstract

The three Baltic states, located east of the Baltic Sea, share a common heritage of medieval Hanseatic cities and traces of multinational rule. Their capitals, Tallinn, Riga, and Vilnius, were all designated as World Heritage Sites after gaining independence in the late 20th century. The three districts are characterized by iconic religious architecture that dominates their skylines, while Soviet-era relics, contrasting with the historic centers, dominate the cityscapes. These historic districts, built between the 13th and early 20th centuries, showcase a complex palette of architectural styles, from medieval Gothic to Art Nouveau. That is, Tallinn has a radial structure with a central medieval castle and spires, red scenery, and coastal and inland views from the castle wall hill; Riga has a grid-like structure with a cityscape in various pastel tones from the Middle Ages to Art Nouveau; Vilnius has a curved structure with a complex religious landscape that includes a Baroque identity and a panoramic complex color palette.Recent preservation and management efforts are being made in accordance with national and local laws and strategic plans, and urban management is striving to achieve a balance between the city's historical and modern aspects through a city-wide center-buffer-periphery structure.
