Abstract

This study explores the cultural meanings embedded in the basic movement explanations used in Korean traditional dance practical education, through the lens of autoethnography and dance anthropology. Based on the actual educational experiences of Korean dance majors, the analysis focuses on lower body move- ments such as Gulshin (knee flexion), Didim (one-foot stepping), leaping, and foot posture, as well as upper body movements emphasizing head gestures and natural curved shapes. Two researchers employed a collaborative autoethnographic ap- proach, drawing on embodied personal memories, class experiences, and literature review. The findings suggest that while the movement explanations passed down through oral instruction and metaphor are not always grounded in systematically established academic theories, they play a significant pedagogical role in embody- ing Korean aesthetics and traditional philosophy. Rather than aiming to identify fixed origins or offer definitive answers, this study critically interprets the cultural expressiveness, educational effectiveness, and limitations of these traditional ex- planatory methods. In doing so, it reflects on how Korean dance movements inter- nalize and transmit traditional culture, and calls for further expansion of research in dance anthropology and autoethnography.
