Abstract

This study aims to expand the understanding of concept of expression, from representation to becoming. In traditional expressionism, expression was dis- cussed as a subjective self-expression centering emotion, within directive and static framework. But non-representational and generative expression, based on Spinoza, Deleuze and Massumi, allows us to understand dance as a process of becoming and a dynamic interaction of senses and affect. The generative expression provides a starting point for expanding the scope of discussions on the practice and theory of contemporary dance, focusing on affect rather than emotion, the intrinsic value rather than form or meaning of movement, and sense prior to conceptualization. This expansion of the concept of expression will serve as a foundation for a new approach to discussing the problem of com- munication with the audience.
