Abstract

Whereas traditional psychology has been focused on negative sides of human behavior or treatment of diseases in relation to human mind, positive psychology rather tries to find ways how ordinary people lives a better life through effective use of his or her strengths. The purpose of this study is to inquire into the implications that positive psychology gives to the field of lifelong education. Through literature review, the study confirms that positive psychology not only provides a variety of psychological theories and models necessary to developing lifelong learning competencies but also has affluent knowledge base related to various issues of the field of lifelong education such as lifelong learning, lifelong educator, and lifelong education institutions. Especially as common themes between lifelong education and positive psychology, the issue of 'happiness' is addressed in connection with the purpose of lifelong learning and the issue of 'authenticity' is discussed in connection with the traits and leadership required to lifelong educators. The issue of 'psychological capital' is also addressed, which is related to the long-term and future oriented management of lifelong education institutions. In conclusion, this study emphasizes on improving partnership between the field of lifelong education and the field of positive psychology for the development of each other.
