Abstract

Seong Seokjae is the author of The Rabbit and the Turtle and Yoon Misuk is the illustrator of the book. This children’s book was based on the Pansori (a Korean traditional form of storytelling) Sugungga and the classical novel Toggijeon. Seong preserved the simplicity of the contents and expressions of the original works (i.e. onomatopoeia and mimesis), and embodied the aesthetics of “satire.” Yoon created the pictures using a combination of lithographs, collages, silk screens and graphics. She drew Yongwang (the Sea King), a Taoist, the Turtle, the Rabbit, a variety of fish, and fowls and crawling. She depicted various background scenes, such as an ocean world, a palace for Yongwang, and mountains for which she chose three main colors for the images: blue for the sea, red for Yongwang’s palace, and green for the mountains. There is a picture in which two Yongwangs can be seen, one enjoying his house warming feast for his new palace and the other promptly getting sick and bursting into tears. In this scene the written story and the picture comprise a “contradictory relationship.” Yoon drew Yongwang as a fish with black face, not as a god, which was the earliest attempt to depict him as such. The Turtle was an envoy to the unknown world to find something that could scarcely be found. The Rabbit, with large ears and red eyes, looked more like a dog and not a typical rabbit. Instead of merely depicting the Rabbit in this manner, Yoon created various facial expressions and gestures for the Rabbit to express his personality and circumstances.
