옛이야기 재화에 대한 한 고찰 － 전래동화 그림책 『구렁덩덩 신선비』를 중심으로

Abstract

This article examines the aspects of an old story, Gureongdeongdeong Sinseonbi, which is retold in picture books of fairy tales that target young children. It summarizes the main narratives and shows how the books published by Borim, Sigoungjunior, Thinkhouse, and Biryongso suggest their main narrative through both text and pictures. When it comes to the substance of the narrative, Sigoungjunior mainly presents a narrative of the second modified type; the other three books are of the third modified type. However, Biryongso dropped the elements “finding a husband and the ordeal of the bride” and “transported to another world.” When it comes to how the narrative develops its contents, all these books use repetitive and colloquial expressions, which shows that these books have inherited aspects of orally transmitted literature. However, there is a problem that is retold in the most complete form, which are the second and third modified forms, and none of the books except Thinkhouse’s reveals its original story. In terms of whether the pictures function as narrative, the pictures in Biryongso and Sigoungjunior mostly function as illustrations, while the pictures in Borim and Thinkhouse function more as narratives. Borim builds narrative beside the text by using pictures implying the themes and acknowledging the whole work. Thinkhouse enlarges the scope of the story by using black colors and emotion to show a person’s inner world in the book. This article can serve as a reference text, since there are almost no studies on the picture books of the fairy tale 『Gureongdeongdeong Sinseonbi』. This article can serve as a guideline for retelling fairy tales in picture books, which are often thoughtlessly mass produced.
