호남이 낳은 걸출한 학자 이재 황윤석은 저술이 다양하며 지적 편력이 대단하다. 그는 성리학자이면서 실학자요 박물학자이기도 하다. 황윤석의 학문은 근본에서 응용에 이르기까지 하나로 연결되어 있다. 학문 외연이 매우 넓지만 성리학의 학문 체계로 수렴된다. 이제는 일부분이 아닌, 전체의 측면에서 황윤석의 학문이 조망되어야 할 것이다. 이 글은 이런 시각과 관점에 기초를 두고 있다. 황윤석의 학문 기반은 역학(易學)에 있다. 역학은 그의 학문의 대동맥이다. 그는 역학에 바탕을 둔 상수학(象數學)에 침잠하였다. 상수학을 가지고 종래 성리학자들이 가장 취약했던 경제 및 과학･기술 등의 측면을 보완하였다. 그는 성리학에 대해 본체와 응용을 갖춘 완정된 학문으로 인정하였다. 또 성리학의 범주 안에 있는 상수학의 가치를 재발견하였다. 그 과정에서 『성리대전(性理大全)』의 중요성을 다시 부각시켰으며, 『성리대전』에 수록된 『황극경세서(皇極經世書)』･『율려신서(律呂新書)』･『황극홍범내편(皇極洪範內篇)』･『역학계몽(易學啓蒙)』 등을 집중적으로 연구하였다. 이 4대 저술은 황윤석이 성리학적 경세론을 펴는데 근간이 되었다.
Abstract
Ijae Hwang Yunseok, a distinguished scholar from Honam area, is of voluminous work and great intellectual experience. He is a Neo-Confucianist, a Silhak (Realist School of Confucianism) scholar and a naturalist. Hwang Yunseok's study is integrated as one from the basis to its application. The scholarly extension is very wide but it is converged to the system of Neo-Confucianism. Hwang Yunseok's study now should be viewed in a general aspect, not in a fragmentary manner. This article is based on such perspective. The root of Hwang Yunseok's study is upon the study of Iching (易學). Study of Iching acts as the main artery of his study. He was immersed in xiangshu xue (象數學, image-number study) which is based on study of Iching. Using xiangshu xue, he supplemented economic, scientific and technological aspects to which existing Neo-Confucianists remained the most vulnerable. He acknowledged that Neo-Confucianism is a complete study equipped with both principle and application. In addition, he rediscovered value of xiangshu xue which is within the category of Neo-Confucianism. In that process, he stressed importance of Songri Taejon (性理大全) yet again and intensively examined Huang Ji Jing Shi Shu (皇極經世書), Lu Lu Xin Shu (律呂新書), Huang Ji Hong Fan Nei Pian (皇極洪範內篇) and Yi Xue Qi Meng (易學啓蒙) and others included in Songri Taejon. This four great work serves as the basis for Hwang Yunseok to develop neo-Confucian thought of governance.
