이재(齋) 황윤석(黃胤錫 : 1729∼1791)은 조선 영조정조 때의 학자요 과학사상사이다. 호남유학을 대표하는 학자의 한 사람이다. 그는 놀라울 정도로 방대한 분량의 저술을 남겼다. 학문 범위가 넓어서 학문 체계와 성격을 쉽게 파악하기가 어렵다. 실제로 지금까지 연구에서는 그의 학술사적 위치와 학문 성격 등에 대한 논의가 집약되지 못하고 설왕설래하였다. 핵심을 비켜간 듯한 감이 없지 않았다. 이러한 문제들은 황윤석의 학문관, 학문 경향, 학문 목표, 학문적 기반 등을 이해하고 나면 자연 해소가 되리라고 생각한다. 이 글에서는 이전의 학자들이 미해결의 문제로 남겨둔 사안들에 대해 나름의 견해를 제시하려 한다. 특히 황윤석의 학문적 성격과 실학자로서의 위상에 초점을 맞추어 논의를 진행하였다. 특히 황윤석의 학문이 상수학에 기반을 두고 있음과 황윤석 실학의 특성과 한계에 대해 중점적으로 논하였다.
Abstract
Lee-Je Hwang Yoon Suk (1729∼1791) was a scholar and scientific philosopher in the era of King Yeongjo and Jeongjo of Joseon. He was one of the scholars representing Confucianism of Honam area. He left tremendously large volume of literature written by him. He covered wide range of learning field, so that his learning system and characteristics could not be easily understood. In the existing studies, actually, his position of academic history, characteristics of his learning and etc have not been intensively discussed with words bandied only. Such studies seem not to get to the point. I believe that this problem will be naturally solved once his view of learning, tendency of learning, goal of learning and base of learning are understood. In this study, I show my own opinion on the issues having been pending since the scholars of the previous time. This study has been focused especially on his academic characteristics and his position as a Silhak scholar. Intensive talk has been done especially on the fact that his learning was based on Sangsuhak and on the characteristics and limits of his Silhak
