전기소설의 죽음에 나타난 인연, 운명, 세계 —<김현감호>, <최치원>을 중심으로—

이 글은 전기소설의 죽음을 인연, 운명, 세계와의 관계에서 살펴본 글이다. 나말여초 전기소설인 <김현감호>, <최치원>을 토대로 하여 이들 작품에 나타난 죽음의 의미를 살펴보았다. 먼저 이를 위한 전제로, 전기소설의 죽음을 ‘미래의 삶’과 관련지을 수 있다는 점을 제시하였다. 주체의 죽음이 타자를 살리기도 하고, 주체의 새로운 삶의 길을 제시한다는 점에서 전기소설 속 주체의 죽음을 ‘열린 죽음’의 맥락에서 살펴볼 수 있다고 보았다. <김현감호>에서는 호녀가 자신이 죽을 수밖에 없는 이유를 천상적, 현실적, 개인적 층위의 세 가지 근거를 제시하고 있다는 점을 살펴보았다. 그리고 이 근거에 의해 호녀는 자신이 죽어서 자신이 사랑하는 김현과 세 오빠들을 살린다. 이런 점에서 호녀의 죽음은 ‘새로운 생명의 죽음’이다. 생명을 살리는 죽음이라는 점에서 그녀의 죽음은 ‘열린 죽음’이라고 보았다. <최치원>에서는 ‘쌍녀분’ 속 두 여귀가 현생에 그 이상을 실현하지 못하여 억울하게 죽었다는 점에서 이들의 죽음은 ‘닫힌 죽음’이 될 수 있다고 보았다. 그런데 자신들의 무덤에 作詩를 하는 최치원과 인연을 맺은 후 해원(解寃)을 한 결과 ‘열린 죽음’으로 질적 변환을 거치게 되는 점을 살펴보았다. 이러한 논의를 통해 알 수 있었던 것은, 전기소설에서는 ‘죽음’이나 ‘사후’의 이야기가 기이의 환상적 수법을 통해 강조되어 있기는 하지만, 궁극적으로 이야기하고자 하는 바는 이 모든 것이 현실적 삶의 소중함을 드러내기 위한 장치요 과정이라는 점이었다.
Abstract
This study dealt with death of novels in the relations with fate, destiny, and the world. The meaning of death was examined on the basis of the latter part of Silla and the early part of Korea’s novels, <Kimhyeon Gam Ho> and <Choichiwon>. For prerequisite of this, it is suggested that death of novels could make a connection with ‘the life of future’. The main character’s death saved the other and it suggest his new way of life. The main character’s death in novels can be examined within the context of ‘the open death’ in this regard. In <Kimhyeon Gam Ho>, the reason about Honyeo’s death are shown by three reasons of heavenly, realistic, and personal horizon. Honyeo could save hence her beloved Kimhyeon and three brothers. In this sense, her death is ‘the death of new life’ that is ‘the open death’ can save other lives. In <Choichiwon> two female ghosts of ‘Ssangnyeoboon’ were wrongly killed without realization of their ideal in the lifetime. In this sense, their death can be ‘the closed death’. However, their death changed into ‘the open death’ as a result of Choichiwon’s special bond that he wrote poem on their graves and made their wish realized. These discussions show the point that the story of ‘death’ or ‘after death’ is highlighted by the fantastic way in novels but the ultimate purpose of story is the device or process to reveal the preciousness of realistic life.
