광개토태왕비 제2면에 대한 考察과 辨正 − 未讀字 解讀 및 ‘任那⋅아라[安羅]’에 대한 문제 제기를 중심으로 −

Abstract

This paper is the second study following ‘An Interpretation of Section 1 of King Gwanggaeto’s Stele’, which was published in The Onji Collection of Works, vol. 64 (2020). This study aims to explore the letter type and find an authentic precedent to identify the letter on King Gwanggaeto’s Stele. For this, it is required to inspect the sentences and letters of ancient documents, for example, The Book of Songs or The book of History, and to discover the same letter types from various steles and ancient calligraphy. Moreover, it is important that the authentic precedents and the letter types must be agreed with its context as well. It is a fundamental process to find and refer to a number of primary sources. Each stone rubbings differs according to the occasions, even if the same person made them on the same day. Rubbings after lime and other related photographs are important as well as rubbings before lime. The previous the article, ‘the Section 1 of King Gwanggaeto’s Stele’ took this methodological approach to examine the first section of the Stele, and this study followed the same. Section 1 of the Stele mainly consists of four parts: the establishment of Goguryeo by King Chumo, the achievement of King Gwanggaeto, the suppression of Biryo, and the suppression of Baekjan. From line 10 of Section 1 to line 5 of Section 2 is the list of 58 castles, which were taken after King Gwanggaeto had conquered Baekjan, and its story about coming back after Baekjan surrendered. The last part of line 5 to 10 of Section 2 is about helping Silla by sending 50,000 foot soldiers and defeating Japanese pirates and its allied Baekjan who invaded Silla. The story about suppressing Baekjan and Japanese pirates, and the war campaign against other countries continues to the beginning of line 8 of Section 3, and it makes the stele as an critical source for overviewing its contemporary internationl affairs. While examining the Section 2 of King Gwanggaeto’s Stele, this study tried to decipher and re-interpret the additional 45 letters of “皐罘婁禾亥赫拒城晉易古秉蹙殘賊迫賊氣橫擊西便獻款跼沉銜取捋耶聆讙待連腹徙腹早晨俄凣更侑突酣” and also reviewed ‘Imnagaya (任那加羅)’ and ‘Arainsubyeong (安羅人戍兵)’ to raise some questions. If there is any error, it is from my lack of knowledge and the further advanced studies of others will be highly appreciated.
