《The Method》에서 아르키메데스는 여러 평면도형과 입체도형의 넓이, 부피, 무게중심을 지레의법칙을 활용하여 구하는, 유명한 발견술을 제시했다. 아르키메데스는 그 연구에서 원뿔의 무게중심이밑면의 중심으로부터 꼭짓점에 이르는 축 위의 1/4 지점에 있다는 사실을 이용하지만, 이에 대한 증명은그의 연구에서 현재 찾아볼 수 없다. 이 논문에서는 아르키메데스의「방법」의 절차적 특징에 초점을맞추어《The Method》의 명제와 그 사이의 관계에 대해 분석한다. 그리고 그러한 분석결과에 기초해,아르키메데스가 원뿔의 무게중심을 구했을 것으로 예측되는 방식에 대해 논의한다.
Abstract
In《The Method》, Archimedes presented the famous heuristic technique for calculating areas, volumes and centers of gravity of various plane and solid figures,utilizing the law of the lever. In that treatise, Archimedes used the fact that the center of gravity of a cone lies one-quarter of the way from the center of the base to the vertex, but the proof of this is not extant in his works. This study analyzes the propositions and their relations of《The Method》focusing on the procedural characteristics of the ‘method’ of Archimedes. According to the result of that analysis,this study discusses the likely approach which was taken for Archimedes to find out the center of gravity of a cone.
