아르키메데스의 《The Method》의 해석기하학적 특성과 그 교육적 시사점에 대한 연구

이 연구에서는, 폴리아가 아르키메데스의 《The Method》에 대해 분석한 것을 수학사적 관점에서재조명한다. 그리고 폴리아의 분석을 정교화하여, 아르키메데스의 《The Method》의 해석기하학적특성을 드러내고 그 특성을 활용하는 미적분학 교육 방향에 대해 논의한다. 그러한 해석기하학적특성에 대한 분석을 토대로, 이 연구에서는 학교수학에서 해석기하학의 사용과 관련해 길이, 넓이,부피 등을 모두 곡선 아래의 넓이 함수인 길이로 전환하는 측면을 잘 드러내어 정적분을 지도하고,불가분량법의 장점과 한계를 함께 가르치고 변화량, 변화율 및 그 사이의 관계를 대수식과 그래프로다루면서 그 불가분량법의 한계를 극복하는 해석기하학의 장점을 인식하게 하는 접근의 교육적필요성을 제기한다.
Abstract
This study takes a look at Polya’s analysis on Archimedes’ 《The Method》froma math-historical perspective. We, based on the elaboration of Polya’s analysis, investigatethe analytic geometric characteristics of Archimedes’ 《The Method》anddiscuss the way of using the characteristics in education of school calculus. So thisstudy brings up the educational need of approach of teaching the definite integralby clearly disclosing the transition from length, area, volume etc into the length asan area function under a curve. And this study suggests the approach of teachingboth merit and deficiency of the indivisibles method, and the educational necessityof making students realizing that the strength of analytic geometry lies in overcomingdeficiency of the indivisibles method by dealing with the relation of variationand rate of change by means of algebraic expression and graph.
