Abstract

The problem of interest in the study and education of Korean classical literature is very important. It may be one of answers to the question why we who live today should read the classics. The factor of interest lay on the whole process to experience of pleasure, impression, and worth through attention, understanding, and interpretation. So this paper examine the categories and breadth of interest of Korean classical novels and the points of finding out interest of it. Through this paper it is confirmed that there are certain trends these ten years in the study and education of Korean classical novels. Generally speaking, the analysis and interpretation of classical works have been done with themes of female, fantasy, and daily life. And the education of the works in the curriculum of Korean middle school have been done to make students to experience the interest in the fun stories or humorous traditional language culture. We can measure the categories and breadth of interest of Korean classical novels with three levels. First, the interest from near to far encountering the historicity of works. Second, the interest from macroscopic to microscopic viewing the forms of works. Third, the interest from inner to over taking the contents of works. The interest of these levels could be took by interactions with various factors. We should study and educate to extend the range of interest of classical novels. In this paper the ways to find out interest from Korean classical novels are suggested with giving examples. We taste the interest by senses of distance between today and past with encountering the historical background like ancient status systems or seasonal customs. And the way is opened to experience the interest of works in the basis of understanding of literary conventions of Korean classical novels. Also there are the interest from the sympathy of common topics of the works with connection between today and past. The concern to classics have flowed ceaselessly all the times and the power to manage change of times could be gained by establishing self identity through reading classics. The reading of Korean classical novels is one of the pleased experiences to pile up the basic cultivations for human life.
