Abstract

In this study, the researcher intended to investigate the archery field culture and seasonal customs of Korea. The research deducted the conclusion through an in-depth contemplation of references. Reference analysis is one of the most common research methods for accessing the cultural anthropology. To achieve the objective of the study, the researcher investigated the landscape of archery field which exhibits the archery culture of that time, the organization of archery field, the manners of archery and pyunsa culture which was a kind of Korean archery culture and the seasonal custom, and obtained the following conclusion. First, archery culture of Korea can be divided before and after of Japanese Invasion of Korea in 1592. The archery implemented as a part of the test for selecting a military officer before the invasion, and the archery culture developed as a seasonal custom of people after the invasion. Secondly, the archery field of the Joseon Dynasty period simply comprised with shooting spot and target, and it was a seasonal customs that originated from military training. Third, various symbols were used for the archery target depending on the archer's official position in the palace. The king used Unghu which depicts the drawing of the bear, the relatives of the king, the military officer and civil magistrate used Mihu, which depicts the reindeer shape, used pig shape of the target for a military test called Chookhu. Fourth, the dignity of classical scholar appeared in the latter period of Joseon dynasty, and it has achieved the decorum of yegi (禮記) of Confucian culture. Fifth, by the archery culture expanded from all over the country, pyunsa a seasonal custom appeared. Sixth, pyunsa was performed within very strict decorum rules and proceeded as the prestigious event.
