Abstract

The purpose of this study is to examine the emancipatory meaning of Gyeongseong (京城)'s urban space in Park Wan-seo's novel Mimang (未忘) and Who Ate All the Shinga. It emphasizes that Park appropriates the modern and colonial character of the city, and in doing so, creates a new and alternative way of narrating Gyeongseong's time and space. In Chapter 2, by reading Mimang, I examined how Gyeongseong is not reduced to a harsh modern and colonial city, but is recreated as a site of liberation of women's autonomy and mobility. In the novel, Gaesung (開城) and the Gaepung-gun (開豊郡) area functioned as a place of safety and identity for the subject, in a sense of human geography, but it also had a negative aspect that constrained the autonomy of woman. Gyeongseong, on the other hand, appeared as a space that granted women anonymity and thus enabled social and physical mobility. In Chapter 3, I examined the ways in which the colonial Gyeongseong is appropriated as an instrument of the subject's pleasure, by closely reading Who Ate All the Shinga. In this novel, Gyeongseong is presented as a city full of colonizer-produced spaces. However, the narrator depicts these space as places of childhood and boyhood pleasures. In sum, Park decolonized the memories of the colonial city. Park does not merely reduce the meaning of Gyeongseong to the oppression of the ‘Japanese occupation’ and the secularized space of the modern city. Park's characters refracted the official uses of urban space and used it as a site of alternative and resistant imagination against the established morality and culture. In doing so, Park disrupted the normative memory and representation system of the colonial period.
