Abstract
The large-scale reclamation site, which had been created by a joint venture of capital, technology, and power since the industrial era, went beyond simple physical spaces and was a place where state-led development discourse and capital logic combined, as well as a space with specific economic orders and ideologies. This article paid attention to the “Seosan Reclamation Site” created by Hyundai Engineering & Construction's Chung Ju-yung, who emerged as a private entity in large- scale state-led reclamation projects in the 1970s and 1980s. In particular, we analyze the dominant spatial narrative that was given and projected on the Seosan Reclamation Site, focusing on Chung Ju-yung's autobiography, and examine how it mythologized the Seosan Reclamation Site as a stage where national development and entrepreneurial achievement intersect. Through this, we examined how the reclaimed land, which was created as an economic space for production and investment through the industrialization era, has been naturalized as a monumental space for development ideology and as a “land underfoot.” The dominant spatial narrative of Seosan reclaimed land was created by intersecting the ‘land created’ and the ‘land underfoot’ where people's lives are led as a battlefield for production and investment. In Chung Ju-yung's entrepreneurial myth, the reclamation narrative, which begins with the hometown of poor farmers and the value of labor, embodies the justification of territorial production as an economic space for production and investment. For him, the reclamation project is presented as a project of national development and entrepreneurial success that creates a land that becomes a basic resource for production and investment through the horizontal expansion of space, and creates a territory of independence and survival. The reclaimed land created through this goes beyond just physical space and is realized as a symbolic place for modernization, land development, and economic development, and as a material basis for national solidarity. It was a ‘reclamation utopia’ that was created as a more natural land, a common space where distribution and possession were imagined than nature. However, the process in which this ‘reclamation utopia’ was created was paradoxically a trajectory in which ‘shaded, old, and ambiguous beings’ were excluded and erased on the newly created land.
